FUMIHIKO MAKI

Born in Tokyo in 1928. Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo in 1952, and completed master’s programs at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He worked at the offices of SOM and Sert Jackson and Associates, as well as at the campus planning office of Washington University in St. Louis. He also served as an associate professor of urban design at Washington University and Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He returned to Japan in 1965 and established Maki and Associates. While continuing his design activities, he served as a professor at the University of Tokyo, teaching from 1979 to 1989. He received numerous awards both domestically and internationally, earning high acclaim. His major awards include the Wolf Prize in Israel (1988), the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture (1990), the Union of International Architects Gold Medal (1993), the Prince of Wales Prize in Urban Design from Harvard University (1993), the Arnold Brunner Memorial Architecture Award (1999), the Praemium Imperiale for Architecture (1999), and the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects (2011). He was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious honor in architecture, in 1993. Although he passed away in 2024, he left behind a legacy that continues to influence the global architectural community and architectural theory.
