RIKEN YAMAMOTO

Born in Beijing in 1945. Architect, Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop Co., Ltd. Graduated from the Department of Architecture, College of Science and Technology, Nihon University. He completed graduate studies at the Faculty of Architecture, Tokyo University of the Arts, and conducted research at the Hiroshi Hara Laboratory, Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo.

Served as a professor at the Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture, Yokohama National University(Y-GSA) from 2007 to 2011, President of Nagoya Zokei University from 2018 to 2022, visiting professor at Tokyo University of the Arts from 2022 to 2024, visiting professor at Kanagawa University from 2024, honorary professor and honorary doctorate at Yokohama National University, and honorary professor and honorary doctorate in Engineering at Nihon University.

Major works include GAZEBO, Saitama Prefectural University, Future University Hakodate, Yokosuka Museum of Art, The Circle at Zurich Airport, and Nagoya Zokei University. He has also worked on mixed-use facilities, public buildings, and apartment complexes in Taoyuan, Tianjin, Beijing, Seoul, and elsewhere.

His major publications include: New Edition: Theory of Dwelling (Heibonsha – Japanese), Local Community Area Principles (Two Virgins – Japanese), The Space of Power, The Power of Space (Two Virgins), and City Beautiful (Kawade Shobo Shinsha – Japanese).

He received the 57th Japan Art Academy Prize (2001), the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2024), and the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award (International Arts Division).
