SHIGERU BAN
Architect

Born in Tokyo in 1957. Graduated from the Cooper Union (NY) with a Bachelor of Architecture and now has offices in Tokyo, Paris, and New York. He is known for his architecture using paper tubes and innovative structures using wood. Major works include the Centre Pompidou Metz (2010), Cardboard Cathedral (2013), Oita Prefectural Art Museum (2014), La Seine Musicale (2017), Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre Shizuoka (2017), SIMOSE (2023), and the Toyota City Museum (2024).

In 1995, he founded the NGO Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN) and has contributed to numerous disaster relief efforts around the world, earning him the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2014), the Mother Teresa Social Justice Award (2017), the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord (2022), and the Praemium Imperiale for Architecture (2024). He is currently a distinguished visiting professor at Shibaura Institute of Technology.
