TOYO ITO
Architect

Born in 1941. Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo in 1965. His major works include Sendai Mediatheque, Tama Art University Library (Hachioji Campus), “Minna no Mori” Gifu Media Cosmos, and National Taichung Theater (Taiwan). Recent works include Mito Civic Hall and Ibaraki City Culture and Child-rearing Support Complex ONIKURU, and EXPO Hall 2025. He is currently working on the National Children’s Future Museum (Taiwan). He has received awards including the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize (Architectural Division, Grand Prize), the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Royal Gold Medal, Praemium Imperiale, the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and the UIA Gold Medal.
He established the private school Ito Architecture School in 2011 as a place to think about the future of cities and architecture. Furthermore, in Omishima, Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, where his museum is located, he is engaged in the development of the island together with volunteer students and local people.
